Update on Bangkok Inside Out

Here's an update on what's going on with my cousin's book, Bangkok Inside Out.They (Daniel and his co-author Guy) have responded to the Thai government's de-facto banning, by issuing this press release

The book hasn't been officially banned, but either way the government's argument seems a bit silly to me. As a "foreigner" who knows nothing about Thai culture, my reaction to reading about this is "seems like challenging place to do business."

I've archived PDFs of further coverage of this story from the Wall Street Journal, the South China Morning Post, the Singapore Strait Times, Farang Magazine, and the International Herald Tribune.

Wow, I missed this blog entry before! I read Jakarta Inside Out when I was in Israel staying at Daniel's dad's house (that would be Uncle Allen!!!!) and I loved it, I thought it was a hoot, my kind of travel guide balancing the good with the bad, in other words a reality based guide that gives you a feel for what to actually expect.

All I have to say is "what a compliment". I've never written anything, but I would be really proud if something I wrote was banned. That puts him in the same category with Salinger, Kurt Vonnegut, etc.

One last thought, what is REALLY weird is that if you are buying that book when you are already IN Bangkok, then you already know about the street dogs and the hookers, too late to have the reputation of the Thai people ruined by the book. I could understand if they wanted to get rid of it over here. Sigh.

Well, I put some comments on this over at my blog

Incredible. I have been aware of this for some time. Anyone who has been there will know it's crazy, but at the same time they are used to illogical things happening in Thailand. There is some politics going on here, with people trying to score points by showing they are trying to clean up Thailand's act. This while things stay pretty much the same on the ground. Oh well, This is Thailand (TIT)! :)
