PyCon 2006 Day One
I'm attending PyCon2006, the Python Conference, in Dallas TX, and have just completed the first full day of activities. The unexpected highlight of the day was having dinner with many of the folks from OSAF and getting a brief chance to listen in on their Chandler work. They even paid for my dinner -- I should have ordered more drinks! I suppose now I'll have to contribute to that project...
I need to adjust my expectations and actions with respect to the conference. Many of the presentations are of the "Introducing X" variety, and I consider it part of my job to keep up with many of the technologies on display here. So for example I left the Django talk just after it began -- not because it was a poor presentation (quite the contrary I'm sure), but rather because I don't need another session learning the basics of Django -- especially given the excellent documentation and videos available on the web. Same for TurboGears, same for Python for Series 60, and same for vobject.
Grant Baillie's talk on the OSAF CalDAV system was a bit more interesting than most because he added in some personal observations about using Twisted. AG Interactive (American Greetings) talked about their large scale web application system -- that was also interesting for its novelty (to me at least). And Paul McGuire's talk on PyParsing was quite good -- probably because I haven't looked at it before and I was impressed with his solution.
Tomorrow promises to be an even more packed day, and I'll be giving a lightning talk (i.e. 5 minutes) on our experiences using Python to build MerchantCircle.
